2ND INTERNATIONAL SONIC BOOM FORUM

 Welcome!

The purpose of holding this Second International Sonic Boom Forum (Lyon, France, July 2-3, 2015) is to foster technical communication and exchange between university, industry, and government scientists, engineers and executives interested in sonic booms. There is increasing international interest in building and operating supersonic civilian aircraft with low-boom signatures, and this Forum is occurring when several research programs are addressing the technical feasibility and design for such aircraft. This Forum should be a timely and unique opportunity to communicate on sonic boom and get information on the latest research advances and progress toward community acceptance of low-booms.

Contributions are desired for recent research findings related to sonic booms: aerodynamic design for sonic boom mitigation, propagation modeling, meteorological variability, and human, animal, and structural responses to booms. Experimental, analytical, and computational studies are all welcome, as well as position papers on sonic boom certification and future regulations. In addition to technical papers, there will be special keynote lectures as well as panel discussions by leaders in government and industry who will provide their perspectives on the challenges of supersonic flight. There will be a special emphasis on mitigation techniques to enable acceptable overland flight.

It is appropriate that this Forum is a satellite meeting occurring in conjunction with the 20th International Symposium on Nonlinear Acoustics (ISNA) held in Lyon, France. All sonic booms start out as nonlinear acoustic waves in the nearfield of supersonic aircraft, and classic nonlinear steeping is a key element determining sonic boom ground signatures. Hence, we deem it appropriate to couple the activities of this timely International Sonic Boom Forum with the 20th ISNA and encourage cross-participation between these meetings. All technical papers presented at the Forum will become a part of the proceedings of the 20th ISNA, and all ISNA participants may attend all Forum sessions. Individuals who wish to attend only the International Sonic Boom Forum and not the 20th ISNA may participate for a reduced registration fee.

The first such Forum was held in State College, PA, USA during July 21-22, 2005 in conjunction with the 17th ISNA. This coupling 10 years ago between the Forum and the ISNA was highly successful, and its time to do it again. The proceedings of the first Forum are part of the proceedings of the 17th ISNA: Innovations in Nonlinear Acoustics, 17th International Symposium on Nonlinear Acoustics, including the International Sonic Boom Forum, AIP Conference Proc. 838, A. Atchley, V. Sparrow, R. Keolian, Eds., (American Institute of Physics, 2006).

We invite everyone to attend this Second International Sonic Boom Forum, and we look forward to your participation in Lyon, France during July 2-3, 2015.

 Sincerely,

Philippe Blanc-Benon, Ecole Centrale de Lyon

Yoshikazu Makino, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Victor W. Sparrow, Pennsylvania State University
